Blocks to combining that affects large numbers of copies (Sorry, too much love!) #4

The Problem

You cannot easily combine two works if BOTH works contain a large number of copies (currently the limit is 200 copies). For example, if you try to combine The Dark Tower (having over 6,000 copies) with The Dark Tower Boxed Set (Books 1-4) (having over 500 copies) you will receive this error:

Sorry, too much love! Because of a number of massive over-combinations (eg., every book by C. S. Lewis combined into one) combinations that change more than 200 books have been disabled, except for LibraryThing staff, until we work out some rules.

See the WikiThing page, https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/Combination_Blocking, for more information.

You were attempting to combine the works: 5974, 49836

In this case, this error prevents you from combining two works that really should not be combined. However, sometimes it does prevent legitimate combinations. Though the message says only LibraryThing staff may combine these books, that’s not entirely true. There are ways to finagle it to combine them, but because of the possibility of harm they aren’t really broadcast (but if you know enough to ask ...)

As such, the previous thread on this topic ended with LibraryThing members volunteering to combine these “too much love” works for other users.

To Get Works Combined Anyway

Post a request to this thread. Please be sure to include links to each work you want combined.

For example:

(In fact, those have already been combined.)

If it’s not obvious that the two works are the same (different title/authors/etc.), it may be helpful if you jot down a few sentences to explain that. But please be sure they really do need to be combined. Keep in mind that different editions with significant textual changes (an original publication versus a later “uncut” version) are treated as different books. Minor changes (like a later version containing a new forward, a new edition with/without illustrations, etc.) do generally belong together in the same work, as do different versions of the same work in different languages.

For help combining works that would affect fewer than 200 copies, please post to the current “Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread”. This thread can be found in the Combiners! group. A new thread is created every 200 posts or so to prevent it from becoming cumbersome.

A bunch of Greek titles have been added to The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, but most of them are other Le Carré titles. Using https://www.librarything.com/work/4819/editions/64018128#, they're clustered a little less than halfway down the list. Without the stuff after /editions/ they're scattered throughout the list. Fortunately, they all have the English title after the Greek. Anyway, they should be separated out and combined with the correct titles, but that's beyond my time and ability.

They have ASIN number (and corresponding) covers to identify them as books, but I'm not sure it would prevent auto-combine with something else, so perhaps best to put disambiguation notice on the work to add author and/or other data if it is to be combined properly

She writes in German for children, and most of the books have not been published in English. That leaves lots of German titles which are correct.

Figuring out where the occasional title belongs that is neither in English or German is difficult, as I've been having trouble with WorldCat recently. Knowing what the title means does not mean that you can combine, as publishers do very weird things with titles.

Trying to combine these two editions of TS Eliot's Selected Poems. They contain the exact same selection of poems (selected by Eliot himself and covering his work before Four Quartets). "A collection of Twain's writing including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain's Sketches, Mark Twain's (Burlesque) Autobiography, The Prince and the Pauper, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and Roughing It. Illustrated by True Williams, E.W. Kemble, Dan Beard and others."

The contents of the "Gramercy" edition:
https://www.amazon.in/Mark-Twain-Four-Complete-Novels/dp/0517092891
"Foreword by Anne Ficklen. Terrific of the best of Twain includes his masterpieces--The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court,--with his burlesque Autobiography and selections from Sketches. Illustrated in black and white."

FWIW, there were no fewer than four valid texts of Citizen of the Galaxy, according to William H. Patterson, Jr.'s Robert A. Heinlein : in dialogue with his century, Volume 2 : 1948-1988: The original draft (110,000 words), the final draft Heinlein submitted (90,000 words), the version serialized by John W. Campbell in Astounding, and the Scribner version modified at the demand of Heinlein's editor Alice Dalgliesh. Other than the original draft, they weren't very different, but both the Astounding and Scribner versions were modified. So there could be different modern editions, depending on whether they were taken from the Heinlein, Campbell, or Dalgliesh editions. Some RAH books have been published in multiple editions as a result, and might perhaps be considered separate books. But I confess that I see no sign of that here.

They were not on the same author page. One was listed as Marple Kalb, Kathleen, and the other as Kalb, Kathleen Marple. I have now combined the author pages, so you could also combine the works there.

The third possibility, and often the easiest is to add both works to your workbench. At the bottom right of each work page is a link "Add work to workbench".

87norabelle414
Mar 28, 2023, 2:40 pm

>86 jasbro: 4875 is a hodge-podge of various ISBNs, 24121770 and 24121779 are "generic editions" (just a title and author and no other information) that someone pulled out from 4875 sometime in 2020-ish. Probably some of the ISBNs in 4875 are adaptations and should be pulled out, but that's not a reason to not combine the two generic editions.

Translations and adaptations of Heidi are so notoriously confusing that scholarly papers have been written trying to decipher who did what. Many of the older adaptations are of completely unknown authorship. It's never going to be perfect but the least we can do is try to keep everything together unless it's determined to be a different adaptation.

88MarthaJeanne
Edited: Mar 28, 2023, 3:27 pm

The other problem with Heidi is that most translations include both of Spyri's books. But not all. I tried to figure it out several years ago when I read the original German. Nope. It's just too hard, even for editions with ISBNs.

Or they treat translations as separate works. I'm particularly alert to that right now because it's happening with covers, too -- there is a user who is regularly flagging covers of foreign translations as being inapplicable to the work. :-( Do we need to ask for some more explicit instructions on the combine and separate pages?

I suppose Scholastic might have published different versions for different age ranges, at least one abridged and a at least one unabridged. But I don't know that for sure and it might not be possible to distinguish them properly if so.

Probably best to separate it out.

I wouldn't think you need more explicit instructions - I'd raise the behaviour directly with the user who appears to be misunderstanding the policy on translations.

This might be true if there were a cost to trying to create more explicit instructions. But there isn't. What if the user is not an English-speaker, or doesn't know how to read messages? A lot of the instructions on LibraryThing are... less than ideally clear.

Of course, they may not read the instructions. But it wouldn't hurt to be clearer, and it might help.

Note the subject of my post: Someone suggested directly messaging the user rather than making the help better. How does it help to send a direct message in English to a user who is not an English speaker?

If we fix the help, then of course it will be translated!

>111 MarthaJeanne: There's no reason for those canonical titles, not a single book title of either work references "original edition" or "second edition". I have the so-called "original edition" in my hands right now and it has 390 numbered pages plus 10 introduction pages.

Edited: Jun 24, 2023, 7:08 pm

>110 norabelle414: I made the separation and proposed the canonical titles based on two observations: (1) the publisher's website, https://milkweed.org/book/braiding-sweetgrass, reports new content (specifically a new author's introduction) for their second hardcover edition; and (2) apparent differences in contents among the eighteen "formats & editions" that WorldCat reports.

I grant that we don't normally distinguish works based on various editions' introductions alone; but a new introduction by the author strikes me as a meaningful addition to her original work, and that's the edition I want. As for the respective editions' contents, I attempted to list each in their respective "Book description" CK, but I can't say whether the differences are material or if they're merely re-worded and possibly re-ordered. I would need one of each to compare or confirm, one way or the other.

If the separation is in error, I would ask someone with better knowledge of both editions to either correct it or let us know.

The question is whether two ordinary people having each read one of the two editions would be able to discuss it without knowing that they had read different editions. I don't believe that there is any case in which the forward would make any difference no matter who wrote it

I'm pretty sure there's an error in there. I've met Michael Holmes; he is a modern author. J. B. Lightfoot died in the nineteenth century. Oh, Lightfoot worked on the Apostolic Fathers, but if Holmes is using the Lightfoot translation, then Holmes didn't do anything. :-) I observe that the Apostolic Fathers book is much more popular than anything else Holmes has published, even though his work on the Greek Bible is far more important (he was one of the most important workers in the field of this generation). There has to be a combination error -- but what it is I have no idea. Editions of The Apostolic Fathers are an incredible mess; it's an undefined set of writings. :-(

Fair enough. But that might still be a separate work. And I find it hard to believe that Holmes, who is a mainstream textual critic (i.e. an editor of Greek texts who uses the methods common in New Testament textual criticism) would use a nineteenth century Greek text. He knows better. :-)

I just took a look at the editions involved there. I would guess there more than a dozen wrong combinations -- not just different translations but different parts included :-( But I don't have the information to fix it. :-( This is a job for a specialist. :-(
