Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread #40

1jasbro
Jul 26, 2011, 5:02 pm

**Please read as there have been modifications**
_________________________________________

This thread is for LT’ers or thingamabrarians, or members, or their designees, to post combining or separating problems with their books.

** If a book has been combined with a book that is extremely different from the original.
** If a book won’t combine with the other books just like it.
** There is a problem with the entry & it is just too overwhelming to deal with.

________________________________________

WHEN YOU POST:

Give us the TITLE & author, plus any other information you think we might need & please NUMBER them if you post more than one.

Example:
..Please combine:

#1: The story of the life of you
http://www.librarything.com/work/XXXXXX
http://www.librarything.com/work/YYYYYYYY

#2: The story of the life of everyone else
http://www.librarything.com/work/WWWWW
http://www.librarything.com/work/ZZZZZZZZ

** Please do not give us search pages or author pages.
Give us concrete & specific works to be combined, not groups of possibles, unless you have questions. Series pages can be helpful.

** You can ask us to look at a set of works to ask our opinions or ask if someone with a specific language or subject knowledge look at your request, but please be brief.

** Make your request easy for yourself & for the combiners who will help you.

Then you can just wait, “and someone will be with you shortly.”
Please, keep in mind this work is done by volunteers, not LT staff.

*** If you number multiple requests, it makes it easier if someone can only work on part of a request.

*** If you edit your post to add new items to be combined, please indicate that they are new by preceding with “ETA:” or “Edit:”.

*** Also, please indicate when a request has been "DONE".
________________________________________

Tim’s Guidelines for Proper Etiquette for contacting members about their book records:

“For this topic, I still feel strongly that I’d like to consider it bad form. Many others agree with me. But a few think I’m dictating and are angry about that. So, fine. Let’s just write some guidelines up. I propose that the guidelines be something along the lines of:

* Remember that LibraryThing is used for many different reasons. The way you use and enjoy the site is not necessarily the way others do.
* Be sensitive to how the member is using LibraryThing. Approach members who show no interest in the social side more cautiously.
* Try to provide helpful information and ask questions rather than dictating.
* If the user indicates displeasure at the request, let it drop.
* When in doubt, raise the issue in the Combiners! group before sending a message.”

________________________________________

Skittles’ note: I would like to add that we should ALWAYS use private comment when we absolutely must contact a LT’er, even when their response isn’t private.
_______________________________________

Dr Mike’s (aka theapparatus) note:

If both works that need to be combine have more than 200 records, please post your request in this thread:

http://www.librarything.com/topic/95602

You need staff intervention to handle that request.
________________________________________

When this thread reaches approximately 200 posts, DO NOT POST HERE, but go to thread #41. This thread will be easier to handle if we keep it under 200 (faster loading). Please copy any notes or instructions to the new thread. Thank you.

Feel free to add comments &/or suggestions ... not just “challenges.”

** There is also a Combiner’s Group Information, FAQ & Discussion Thread #2 at: http://www.librarything.com/topic/57164 . That thread is for combining information, discussion in general, not for problems ... .

** The wiki page is here: http://www.librarything.com/wiki/index.php/Book_combining

Dear Group.
just received http://www.librarything.com/work/274383/covers/76218617
It says the Author is "suzanne Szasz" she is the photographer and "Paul Gallico" is the author.
Even His author page points to this book.

Just NOT sure of how to fix this.

Guido

22r.orrison
Edited: Jul 29, 2011, 6:34 am

21 by @guido47> To fix your book, click the Edit Book link on the left; you can then move names between Author and Other Authors, and select their roles appropriately.

23jasbro
Jul 29, 2011, 8:52 am

> #21: Another thought: when I first followed your link, it came up with Suzanne Szasz as Author. Recalculating Title/Author (under "Advanced," at the bottom of the right-hand panel on the Work page) changed the displayed Author name to Paul Gallico. You might try it too, if this continues to be a concern (and you haven't already done it).

24r.orrison
Jul 29, 2011, 9:19 am

That link is to the covers page for his book, which has Suzanne Szasz listed as author (try his link again -- the second number in the URL is his book number). The work as a whole has Paul Gallico (see http://www.librarything.com/work/274383). In this case, recalculate author isn't doing anything, it's just showing the work record instead of his book record.

25fdholt
Jul 29, 2011, 9:38 am

#21 You have the author in your catalog as Szasz. Main responsibility depends on the extent of each's contribution and it can be fuzzy in library cataloging. Do as r.orrison suggests and switch the author and other author if you want Gallico. I also put in Szasz as the photographer so the book will show up in both author pages.

Guess "someone once" used Suzi? as the author and it stuck :-)

I tried to combine Joël de Rosnay Hubert Reeves, Yves Coppens, Domin with Hubert Reeves but I didn't manage. The first has the title in Greek and the second in English, with an original French title.

I don't know what must be done, but maby is combining the authors better, but otherwise here is the question with the links

Please combine:

with

http://www.librarything.com/work/446429 Origins: Speculations on the Cosmos, Earth and Mankind 55 exemples

About the last work I combined it with a proposed 0-copie one and the title changed from French into English on the Dutch site. There is no dutch title available for this work.

Also I'm currently reading a hard copy version of the Hobbit, ISBN 0395071224. I see a couple of these ISBNs listed under the annotated version. They probably should be removed from the annotated version and placed under the normal one.

88> Except that those ISBNs are listed with a title of The Annotated Hobbit:

The Annotated Hobbit / Tolkien, J.R.R. (ISBN 0395071224) (2 copies separate)

I believe current practice is for the title to take precedence over the ISBN for combining when there's a mismatch on the assumption that the person who has that book is more likely to have made sure the title is correct than the ISBN.

So please don't move those editions between works.

For some reason, if I search my library for the author, his page shows,

but my book is not there, the same thing if I click on his name from my book page.

Worked at bit at this. If anyone else want to help, it would be appreciated. Will get back to this after some rest.

Also I checked First Search for some of the combinations which they say are the same but I was hestitant and uncombined several things that I had combined. Still not sure about some others and left them.

The problem is the NSC (National Safety Council), Red Cross and other groups published titles that were the same. Sometimes I could verify that the groups were co-publishers and sometimes I could not.

Also ran into a nasty problem with the National Safety Council (US) and the National Safety Council of Australia. These were combined. I separated it out.
http://www.librarything.com/author/nationalsafetycounci
(Australia)
and put in a disambiguation notice since many of the works are actually the US Council
http://www.librarything.com/author/councilnationalsafet
Have no idea why they say Australia when the edition page of the work does not. Will try to split and sort out later.

To make it even more interesting, there is a listing for National Safety Council of Western Australia but the link goes to plain Australia. Have no idea where it is as the plain Australia page doesn't list it.

Also I need an opinion:
The US Council also has works at:
http://www.librarything.com/author/nsc
This is the same group but should they be combined? Before seeing this I did combine National Safety Council NCS with National Safety Council.

Aug 10, 2011, 5:08 pm

Actually, don't http://www.librarything.com/author/nationalsafetycounci and http://www.librarything.com/author/councilnationalsafet need to combined? Neither one of them has any piece of Australia or United States in the url so either author could end up in either place. So isn't this a case where the two should be combined and then disambiguated?

139fdholt
Edited: Aug 10, 2011, 5:49 pm

#138 Not sure if they should or not and if nsc should be combined into it or not. Will wait until all thoughts are in - also in doing a title seach of all 3 authors, only 2 titles are the NSC of Australia.

Can someone review these and figure out if they need to be combined or split or make into chop liver:

The third one is an audio book. Don't know if it's complete or adbridged or what. On my locked down terminal so I can't do the legwork.

Thanks

edit: AFter my first attempt to sort some sport oriented bibles, I swore I would never look at them again.

Two versions of the same book. Identical titles, one edition each has the ISBN 0222013273.

#195 Done. The third one is on CD. Can't tell if it's complete or not so combined it but then thought better of it and separated it again.
