Short biography
Sir Terence David John Pratchett (28 April 1948 – 12 March 2015) was an English humorist, satirist, and author of fantasy novels, especially comical works. He is best known for his Discworld series of 41 novels.

Pratchett's first novel, The Carpet People, was published in 1971. The first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983, after which Pratchett wrote an average of two books a year. His 2011 Discworld novel Snuff became the third-fastest-selling hardback adult-readership novel since records began in the UK, selling 55,000 copies in the first three days. The final Discworld novel, The Shepherd's Crown, was published in August 2015, five months after his death.

Pratchett, with more than 85 million books sold worldwide in 37 languages, was the UK's best-selling author of the 1990s. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1998 and was knighted for services to literature in the 2009 New Year Honours. In 2001 he won the annual Carnegie Medal for The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents, the first Discworld book marketed for children. He received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2010.

In December 2007, Pratchett announced that he had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. He later made a substantial public donation to the Alzheimer's Research Trust, filmed a television programme chronicling his experiences with the condition for the BBC, and became a patron for Alzheimer's Research UK. Pratchett died on 12 March 2015, aged 66.

The Clan is a group of rats who came to awareness and intelligence after feeding on a magical refuse pile. Maurice is a cat who started talking about the same time. Together with the dumb looking kid, Keith, they have a fantastic plan for stripping government of their money.

But in Bad Blintz the story takes an unexpected turn.

This is the first Discworld book geared specifically for a younger audience. It doesn't feel like it's geared towards kids. It's a fun book with plenty of moral lessons and twists and turns and muddy intervals. I love Maurice and Sardines and Keith and Peaches.

And in my opinion the book is far superior to the animated show floating out there.

This tale of how Polly runs away to war to find her brother, becomes Oliver, learns a lot about life, and saves the world is a lovely one. It does occasionally suffer from 'that's not how you do feminism, Mr Pratchett', both with characters coming out with clangers [forgiveable] and the authorial voice making sweepingly *wrong* statements [no, I can't think of what it was, but I was cranky for a couple of days]. I read it out slowly to the kids (ages 11, 14, and 17), over several months (not always the same set of kids - it started as "the book we read while middlest is at dancing"), and there was often discussion about it at other times.

Like many of Pratchett's later books, it did feel like he had picked a set of topics to investigate in detail, and that here we had War! what is it good for!, women in the military, and a side order of how the laity handle religion when the pronouncements become incomprehensible.

Guards! Guards! is an early Discworld novel which, to my delight, was hatched in the same month of the same year (November 1989) that I hatched my first child, Diana. It feels like fate.

This novel asks and answers important questions: "what happens when a power-hungry man who has stolen a book of magic finds gormless acolytes to assist him in his hostile takeover?" (ans: dragons); "what happens when you mix an alcoholic watch captain and an aristocratic dragon-breeder" (ans: love), and "what does Nobby do in his spare time" (ans: folk dancing).

We are introduced to some of my favourite Discworld characters: the Librarian, Sam Vimes, the Patrician, and Lady Sybil Ramkin.

I must admit that i got rather bored midway through and skimmed a chunk of the book until the coronation scenes were over. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this tale, and am looking forward to more re-reading of the stories of the City Watch.
