What YA lit character(s) did/do you have a crush on?

I was (and arguably still am) totally in love with Calvin from the Wrinkle in Time series - he had me from that scene where he tells Meg to keep wearing her glasses so nobody else will find out how beautiful her eyes are. Aww! ;)

Nov 5, 2006, 4:22 pm

I'm not sure about a YA lit character I've ever had a crush on, but I sure can tell you a YA lit author I have a crush on...Neil Gaiman!

I'll have to keep thinking about the characters.

I can't just pick one!! If I were still a teen these would be my top picks:

Jesse from The Mediator series. I love how he always calls Suze "querida".

Edward from Twilight is pretty much heartthrob material, but a bit on the scary side.

Arkarian from The Guardians of Time series by Marianne Curley is an amazing character. Blue hair and violet eyes, who can complain?

Harry Potter, just because he's the boy who lived and now that he's older, he is most definately turning in to romantic hero material

Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables. Yum...

And the Weasley twins from Harry Potter.

And Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice...

If we're going to limit it to YA books.....

My first crush I can remember was on Peter Pan.

After that...
I'm totally with you on Calvin from A Wrinkle in Time, although by the time we got around to A Swiftly Tilting Planet I started crushing on Charles Wallace as well.

Nat Eaton from The Witch of Blackbird Pond

Prince Caspian from the Narnia series

Will Parry from the His Dark Materials series

Remus Lupin from Harry Potter

Will Stanton from The Dark is Rising

Apparently I collect Book Boyfriends fairly easily. :)

6kperry
Nov 6, 2006, 3:58 pm

I would have to say:

Edward from Twilight
Fang from Maximum Ride
Zane from Pretties
James from A Certain Slant of Light

7Jenson_AKA_DL
Nov 6, 2006, 4:15 pm

Kind of off the subject but the post about Will Stanton made me think of it. I always wondered if he and Jane ever got together after the series ended (you know, in that imaginary world where all literary characters exist in peace and harmony LOL). It seemed as though there might have been a little something between them.

8becbart
Nov 6, 2006, 5:47 pm

Fyrefly - although I don't recall particularly crushing on Charles Wallace, I definitely had a crush on one of the twins - either Denys or Sandy, can't remember which - when I read Many Waters. My guess is that Calvin was a good influence on them, lol.

T.J. from Chris Crutcher's Whale Talk was also the object of some of my affections. My first lit crush was Joe Hardy from the Hardy Boys, and it is worth noting that I thought Nancy Drew had it pretty darn good with Ned as well!

Hi, I'm new to this group, and I'm way too old to still have crushes on YA book boys, but, I do. And as with some of the rest of you, the Wills dominate:

Will Stanton from The Dark is Rising (Truly, the longest crush of my life. Longer than Christian Bale and longer than Bono.)
Will Parry from His Dark Materials

also important, but not at the same level as the two Wills:

Iorek from His Dark Materials
Ender Wiggin from Ender's Game, etc.
Ron Weasley from Harry Potter
Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice
Mr. Knightley from Emma
Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre

Those last 3 obviously aren't YA books and technically I suppose Ender's Game isn't either. But since I read them all when I was a teenager I will count them.

Upon rereading Jane Eyre this past year I have less of a crush on Rochester and more of a crush on Jane!

Thanks for letting me indulge myself!

10nicoletort
Nov 6, 2006, 9:34 pm

In LOVE with D'Artagnon from The Three Musketeers but I suppose that's not YA.

George from Tamora Pierce's Alanna series.

And I do remember telling my eighth grade English class that "Tom Sawyer is totally the type of guy I'd date" (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, of course)

And on a side note, I had the biggest crush on Dimitri from the movie (the ANIMATED) movie Anastasia.

11lington
Nov 6, 2006, 9:46 pm

Wow, I love Dmitri too. But I'm partial to John Cusack anyway.

As for YA characters, I always liked Charming from Ella Enchanted, Sirius Black from Harry Potter, Laurie (Little Women), and John Reid (Time Enough for Drums). I'm sure I'll think of many more later, though.

12fyrefly98
Nov 6, 2006, 10:03 pm

nicoletort - Oh, I only just read the Song of the Lioness series recently (and I haven't been a YA in about a decade), but if I'd read them back in the day, I TOTALLY would have fallen for George.

13magslhalliday
Nov 7, 2006, 10:35 am

John Cusack is the man!

I had a thing for Ged from A Wizard of Earthsea and Robinton from Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels (especially in Dragonsinger and Dragonsong).

...and I always wondered about Will Stanton and Bran!

14_Zoe_
Nov 7, 2006, 3:46 pm

One of my favourites was always Gabriel from L.J. Smith's Dark Visions trilogy. (Ah, touchstones... why did I have to tell you that L.J. Smith is indeed L.J. Smith rather than Alexander McCall Smith?).

15SheReads
Nov 7, 2006, 4:34 pm

Eragon from Eragon
Edward from Twilight
J.R. Moehringer...alright I realize he is not fictional and not really a YA author (but definitely YA appropriate) but I have a crush on him! The Tender Bar was wonderful and I really felt like I got to know him...then I met him. Okay...I should move on.

The high school girls I work with would say ...
Edward from Twilight
Kartik (sp??) from A Great and Terrible Beauty

16kidsilkhaze
Nov 7, 2006, 10:34 pm

It's ok bookmindful and nicoletort-- In my system, paperback classics are all catalogued as YA!

Also, I want to add in Dave the Laugh from Away Laughing on a Fast Camel and others...

I have to admit that I've probably read every single Sweet Valley High series book and was in love with Conner (from the Senior series).
Without a doubt, went through my Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables and Mark Darcy from Pride and Prejudice stage but those are general favorites. I have to say that I think my personal favorite might have to be Rhett Butler, perhaps out of loyalty to Clark Gable from Gone with the Wind. (or John Reid from Time Enough for Drums too, but I believe he's already taken).
Oh, and I was oddly very attracted to Vermeer from A Girl With a Pearl Earring.
As a final note, why do men in books always seem so much better than ones in real life?

18Aquila
Nov 8, 2006, 7:17 pm

George (Georgina) Kirrin from Enid Blyton's Famous Five books.
Jo March from Little Women
Joey Bettany Elinor M. Brent-Dyer's Chalet School books.
Tamzin Gray from Monica Edwards Romney Marsh books (Cargo of Horses)
Almost all Robin Mckinley's heroines.
Éowyn
Troy Palmer from Margaret Mahy's The Haunting
Caddie Woodlawn
Dicey Tillerman from Cynthia Voight's Homecoming series

dizzi, are the men you are talking about all in books written by women?

19kylara
Nov 10, 2006, 3:08 pm

Edward & Jacob from both Twilight & New Moon *swoon*

There was a guy from A Great and Terrible Beauty but of course I can't remember his name now :/ It was last year though when I read the book, if that makes any excuse.

20dizzi

My secret agent lover man in the Weetzie Bat books.

22foggidawn
Nov 12, 2006, 8:38 pm

I'm crazy about both Mendanbar and Telemain from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Let's see, who else? . . .

Howl from Howl's Moving Castle, and Christopher Chant (Chrestomanci) from Charmed Life.

Corlath from The Blue Sword, and Luthe from The Hero and the Crown.

Aragorn from The Lord of the Rings. (Which probably doesn't count as YA, but oh, well.)

And (blush) Severus Snape. I know, I know. . .

This, if it does nothing else, highlights my abiding love for YA fantasy.

I don't remember having many literary crushes when I was actually a YA -- Sam Gribley from My Side of the Mountain, maybe and definitely Calvin from A Wrinkle in Time. Oh, and Laurie from Little Women. I'm still bitter that he didn't end up with Jo. Amy was a brat and didn't deserve him. I was much happier that Rose ended up with my other Alcott crush, Mac (Eight Cousins, Rose in Bloom).

23foggidawn

And I forgot Eugenides (The Thief/Queen of Attolia/King of Attolia)!

Nov 12, 2006, 9:41 pm

kidsilkhaze - I'm totally with you on Dave the Laugh!!

25nicoletort
Nov 13, 2006, 4:13 pm

Have to agree with foggidawn. Laurie was a favorite, and saw myself as Jo when I read it (circa fifth grade, so I was 11?) so I was extremely upset when they didn't end up together. The random professor seemed like a cop out if you ask me.

I agree with Howl from Howl's Moving Castle as well.

And I'll throw in the centaur from Artemis Fowl even though I don't think that would work out so well in real life. Butler started to grow on me in the later books as well.

I am new to this group and I love this thread. I am/was in love with a lot of the favorites; Calvin, Laurie, Gilbert. But my biggest crush is Joe in the Betsy-Tacy series. I adore him. I know they aren't strictly YA, the early ones are definitely kid lit, but once Betsy is in high school and beyond they are YA.

Dexter from Sarah Dessen's This Lullaby...

and many others...

Ok, so I don't think I ever stopped reading as a kid (I still don't, though finding time between classes gets difficult).

Jesse from The Mediator, whoever said that thing about him calling her 'querida' is dead on.

Sirius Black, Severus Snape, and Remus Lupin, in that order, from Harry Potter

Strat from the 'time' series by Caroline B. Cooney

The Phantom (Erik) from The Phantom of the Opera (not sure if you'd actually count this as YA, but I read it when I was reading the others, so...)

Westley from The Princess Bride

That's all I can think of right now...

30hobbitprincess

I second Gilbert Blythe. They just don't come much better than that.

31Jenson_AKA_DL
Nov 25, 2006, 11:12 pm

That was me that made the "querida" comment :-) Jesse is just very swoon worthy. I love the part when he shows up in the backseat of the car when Suze is getting kissed for the first time LOL Also when he finds her in Doc's bed with all the tools because of Maria and when he takes care of her feet after the Jimmy Cho incident....I could go on and on, but I guess I'll stop there.

We now have t-shirts to make our Edward (from Twilight) obsession public. One our students (kylara) created a t-shirt and had them made for her and a few of her obsessed friends (she included me--yeah!!). On the front they say... "one of Edward's crazy wannabe wives"...the crazy is crossed out and on the back it has fun quotes that we all got to write on all the t-shirts. Oh the fun we have with character crushes!

Yep, I have to admit that I also fell for Edward in Twilight.
I also crushed on Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice and that was before I saw Colin Firth play him!
Dave the Laugh is my favorite from the Georgia Nicholson books as well.
I fell for David in Uglies, but then Zane came along in Pretties and I fell for him even harder. :)

Hi, i'm new in this group, this is a very interesting thread.
I had a huge crush on:

Howl from Howl's Moving Castle
Nathaniel from The Bartimaeus Trilogy, he's totally cool in the third book.
Artemis Fowl
Legolas from Lord of The Rings

and i think Dustfinger from Inkheart is mysteriously interesting (kind of like Severus Snape and Sirius Black, in a way). I havent read Inkspell yet, and I'm partly hoping he would end up with Resa (but then I dont want to think about Mo's feeling..)

39liselle40
Dec 19, 2006, 12:23 pm

so definately Silk, Riva, and Zakath from David Eddings books. Eragon from, obviously, Eragon. and Mat from the Wheel of Time series.

oh yeah, for the benefit of SheReads, HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT.

40fyrefly98
Dec 19, 2006, 1:56 pm

>40 fyrefly98:
Mat's cute but whines a bit too much for my tastes.

I had a mini-crush forming on Perrin in the first few books but then he got all "FAILE FAILE FAILE endoftheworlddon'tcare FAILE FAILE FAILE" all the time, so that killed it.

I think if I were forced to pick a Book!Boyfriend from the WoT books, I'd have to go with Gawyn (good blend of cute/honorable/not crazy)... but he's not nearly on the same level as my other literary crushes.

Won't this be a long list! ;D Fictional guys are better than real ones, I always say.

Edward Cullen;; Twilight
Sirius Black;; Harry Potter
Zane;; Pretties
Nat Eaton;; The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Rex;; Peaches
Dexter;; This Lullaby
Howl;; Howl's Moving Castle
Legolas;; Lord of the Rings
Pudge;; Looking for Alaska
Jacob;; Blue is for Nightmares
Dominic;; Don't Die, Dragonfly
Mr. Crepsley and Evra Von;; Cirque du Freak
Fletcher;; The Queen Geek Social Club
Charles;; Crooked
Bryce;; Flipped
Fang and Iggy;; Maximum Ride
Nick;; Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Hunter;; So Yesterday
V;; V for Vendetta

And I think that's about it. :D Don't worry, loves, I DO have a social life.

I had a bit of a crush on Brom in Eragon, moreso after Jeremy Irons played him in the movie (does that count?).

I also found Dustfinger in Inkheart mysterious, making him attractive. And I like Sirius more than Lupin as a character, but I think I'd have more of a crush on Lupin in Harry Potter (obviously). And who wouldn't have a crush on Westley in Princess Bride? Though I really liked Inigo too. And I had a crush on Nathaniel from Bartimaeus Trilogy from book 1, and I only liked him more as the series progressed. The third book was awesome.

I never realized how very much I became attached to characters.

44fyrefly98
Jan 25, 2007, 4:29 pm

Having finally read some of the series that have been mentioned more than once in this thread, I understand why certain characters keep cropping up.

I read the Uglies trilogy, and while I found both David and Zane to be cute and charming, neither of them really crossed the border into BookBoyfriend territory for me.

On the other hand, I just finished The Mediator series this morning, and my goodness, where do I find myself a Jesse? I mean, he was obviously written to be the perfect guy, but come on! He's gorgeous, he likes reading, and he took care of her gross blistered feet!

Heh. Okay, back to real life. :)

I haven't read the Wrinkle in Time series since I was young, but the mentions of Calvin twigged a vague memory of having a crush on him.

Dave the Laugh is also my fave from the Louise Rennison books as well.

Wow, I'd forgotten about Strat from the Caroline B. Cooney time books as well.

I'm sure I have some that aren't listed here, but I haven't finished cataloguing my old YA books, and even though they're all in this very room, I can't see the uncatalogued ones, because they're second layers on top shelves that I can't reach! I guess i'll just have to come back to this thread later on! When I've gotten brave enough to tackle those shelves!

51stephxsu
Feb 18, 2007, 5:48 pm

Oh my gosh, Morphidae, you just reminded me of Almanzo! I definitely had a crush on him too, him with his black hair and blue eyes ;) haha

As for others...

Gilbert Blythe, but really it was after watching the movie
Dexter from This Lullaby
Roiben from Tithe
Liam from Pop Princess
Will Trombal from Saving Francesca

Of course I love Jesse from the Mediator series, but I also had a kind of crush on Paul. I mean, he's supposed to be the bad guy and all, but I think we all must admit to ourselves that every once in a while we'd like to be crushed on by a confident, hot guy who's slightly dangerous.

I too am a literary-slut, my book crushes for YA are:

Gabriel from Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause
Gabriel from Dark Visions by Lisa Jane Smith
George from the Alanna books by Tamora Pierce is a huge abiding crush of mine although I was torn when she introduced Liam in Lioness Rampant.
Hunter from the Sweep books by Cate Tiernan and I really liked Richard in the Balefire series.
I too am big with the Jesse love from the Mediator series by Jenny Carroll/Meg Cabot (whatever handle she goes by these days)

Really liking the boys in Rachel Caine's Morganville vampires series too.

For non YA book crushes I seem to have a worrying penchant for assassins; Ranger (Stephanie Plum), Fitzchivalry (Farseer), and Edward (Anita Blake)

Keith from 13 Little Blue Envelopes
Murtagh from Eragon (and not just after the movie xD)
Iggy from Maximum Ride
Percy from The Scarlet Pimpernel
Miles "Pudge" from Looking for Alaska
Artemis Fowl from Artemis Fowl
Neville from Harry Potter
Edmund from Chronicles of Narnia
Mr. Bingley from Pride and Prejudice
and lastly a small one on Masimo from Georgia Nicolson, because I know what it's like, making out with an Italian guy ;D

And, although I'm not bi/lesbian, if these girls were guys I would also love them to death.

Alaska from Looking for Alaska
Kino from Kino No Tabi
Lizzie from Pride and Prejudice
Catherine from Wuthering Heights
Max from Maximum Ride
Arya from Eragon
Carmen from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Holly from Artemis Fowl

#56 goodgolly - when we were eleven, my best friend and I used to prop up my copy of Taran Wanderer, (with Jody Lee's most excellent cover), and just stare at it. It's kind of embarrassing to look back on, but we totally had the hots for him.

Wow, everyone here is WAY boy-crazy.

I was amused by this one: "since the first book I read happened to be Winnie the Pooh, I've had a crush on Christopher Robin since about 3."

A lot of people have mentioned Edward from the Twilight books. How?? He's TOO perfect. He's handsome (without really an image of his handsomeness), he's strong, he's powerful, he wants to drink the blood of his beloved... OK, there's a flaw there... but it just seems so clichéd to like Edward. That's what annoys me about Bella.

But I have a couple questions. What comprises a literary crush? If you have one, does it mean you lie awake at night thinking, "Oh, but if only Edward/Sirius/Gilbert, etc. were real, and would ask me out!" When that character has a sucessful relationship with another character, not you, do you scream "No!" and slam the book to the floor, only to pick it up a minute later to read more of your beloved?

Or is it more along the lines of "Aw, s/he is cool... interesting... good-looking... intriguing... Too bad it's fiction"?

65sadiegrrrl
Mar 27, 2007, 1:53 am

had to jump in on this one...i'll limit it to just a few...

ponyboy from the outsiders
marcus flutie from sloppy firsts
sirius and remus from harry potter
george and gary from the alanna series
numair from the wild magic series
and
calvin from a wrinkle in time

literary crushes are the best...thanks for letting me reminisce...

66fyrefly98
Mar 27, 2007, 7:13 am

>64 csoki637:

No, I think the idea of literary crushes is definitely more of the third - at least for me. I always call them my BookBoyfriends... the idea being that if I could somehow transport myself into their books (a la Inkheart), I'd set myself about making them my boyfriend. :) These characters are obviously written to have appealing characteristics... we can find them appealing while still separating reality from fiction.

And, at least for me, most (though not all) of my BookBoyfriends are the romantic lead of their story, or at least have a romantic relationship. There's nothing of jealousy about it - it just makes it easier to mentally cast myself as the female lead.

67Caramellunacy

>65 sadiegrrrl:
I'm so glad somebody else had a crush on Gary too! I adored George, too, but Gary was always my favorite (not for Alanna, though).

And I have no problem with my literary crushes having romantic relationships. In fact, I prefer it that way because, like fyrefly said, I like to be able to cast myself as the heroine. Plus I like to see my BookBoyfriends happy.

Wow, I just have to jump on the bandwagon here. I realized as I got older that what I liked in book-men I liked in life-men. While there haven't been any perfect matches, at least I know what I like. These literary crushes started as someone I would have killed to date, but now they're models of a man I'd like to have fully enmeshed in my daily life.

So I had a total crush on Calvin from the very first time I read A Wrinkle in Time

I adored Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, like so many others on this thread.

And I never got enough of Aragorn or Gandalf from Lord of the Rings...on the Gandalf thing, it wasn't so much a physical attraction, it was that he could have taught me some very cool things.

Recently, I developed a crush on Cody from Sharon Creech's The Wanderer. I would love to know what he grew up to be.

I've also gained a new series to read from this discussion. I've never heard of Cabot's The Mediator series. I just added the first book to a shopping list for tomorrow.

Too damn right! I got the first one out of the library, read it in a day, passed it to a friend at work, who read it in a day and then immediately ordered the rest of the series from amazon priority - and read them one per day, immediately handing them off to me. :-)

They're not great literature or anything, but man, are they addictive, trashy, fluffy fun.

Oh wow, I love this topic. On the other hand, it can't be good for my romantic future to be constantly comparing guys I meet in real life to guys that are fictional and therefore perfect (in my imaginings of them).

Here's my list:
1. Marcus Flutie from the Jessica Darling books by Megan Mccafferty, even though I spent most of Charmed Thirds being pretty mad at him.

2. George from The Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce.

3. Brian from all the Traveling Pants books, but most of all Girls in Pants.

4. Kartik from A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels.

5. Gideon and Noel from The Boyfriend List and The Boy Book.

6. Will Trombol from Saving Francesca.

7. Will from The Pillow Book of Cordelia Kenn

8. Nick from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

9. Shrimp from Rachel Cohn's other books.

10. Ed from I Am the Messenger

72catchingcove

adding on to The Mediator mini-thread: I got the first book from the bookstore and finished it in a day. Now I must read the rest. Which I think will at least partially slake my fantasy thirst until August when Eclipse comes out.

73quicksylver_btg
Apr 6, 2007, 1:48 am

1. The whole set of boys, but mostly George and Jon in the Lioness Rampant series
2. Adam from an L.J. Smith series
3. Geradin from Mirror of Her Dreams and A Man Rides Through
4. King Mendenbar from the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Dealing with Dragons)
5. Both of the twins from Many Waters
6. Felix from The Tricksters
7. Frank from the Hardy Boys (looooonnnnggg story)

Author crushes (not YA): I have to agree with the person that said Neil Gaiman. After him would definitely be Dan Savage.

Ok, stopping now before I embarrass myself!

74bookherd
Apr 9, 2007, 9:19 pm

Wow, what a fun thread. Ditto to Nat from Witch of Blackbird Pond, Ged (especially endearing in The Tombs of Atuan), Taran from The Prydain Chronicles, and Percy from The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Not yet mentioned: Beau Geste; Spiller, from The Borrowers Afield et al.; Snufkin, from Tove Jansson's Moomin series; Ian Direach, from "How Ian Direach Got the Blue Falcon" in Lang's Orange Fairy Book (based mostly on Ford's illustrations, I admit); Sir Gareth of Orkney, from any account of the Knights of the Round Table; a good half-dozen of Rosemary Sutcliff's characters; and, in any and every context, Robin Hood.

As for Lord of the Rings, I too had a crush on Legolas back in the day. Now that I'm no longer a YA, though, it's Faramir I fancy (Tolkien's Faramir, that is, not Jackson's).

Though I love Pride and Prejudice, Mr Darcy's eternal popularity is puzzling to me. He's a brilliantly written character, but as a romantic ideal? Judgmental of others, bottles up his emotions, doesn't communicate well, and is a drag at parties. Good luck, Elizabeth!

Ooh I was looking at this thread and it reminded me of so many great characters.... King Mendenbar! He definitely was an excellent fictional guy.... and the twins from Many Waters!.... Like csoki637, I'm not so enamoured of the 'perfect' type people like Edward or Jesse though. Of Tamora Pierce's guys I always liked Numair, although George would have been good too but I always pictured him as too old...

Edited to add: Now I know I'm going crazy, while I did like Numair, I meant to say I liked Nawat most :P

This is completely off topic, but Bookherd, you are the first person I've met who knows Lang's fairy book series. Aren't they great!

77Caramellunacy
Apr 9, 2007, 11:30 pm

The first time I read it, I thought George was old, too, but when I reread it, he was only 17 at the beginning of Alanna. So he was just over 5 years older than her - which really is far less old than Numair...whom I always expected to be younger. That age difference was kinda weird for me.

78collsers
Apr 10, 2007, 12:14 am

It's a little young to be considered YA, but I still reread them fairly often....I was totally in love with Manly from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series

Also, Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables, though I loved him best in Anne of the Island, and F'nor from Anne McCaffrey's Dragonflight and sequels--he was so much hotter than F'lar.

79suge
Apr 10, 2007, 1:27 am

I'm too old for this, I aught to be ashamed but, how do we like:

Kieran (sp?) from Two Moons in August?

Harry (once he started getting tall), Sirius and Cedric Diggory from Harry Potter, of course.

#22 Snape? You like those strong silent types, huh? I agree he sounds hot, tho a bit mean. Its ok, a week as my boyfriend and he'll have fly hair, and the coolest robes Madam Malkin can make! Yeah, baby!

Isn't Gilbert Blythe from Anne of Green Gables Perfect?

If we are including LOR then Legolas is soooo dreamy.

Shasta from A horse and his boy, Caspian, Rillian and Peter Pevinsie from the Chronicles of Narnia

And all flavors of Mr Darcy, of course!

80Caramellunacy
Apr 10, 2007, 8:53 am

OOh, I admit to Caspian, too. I actually really didn't like most of the Chronicles of Narnia, but Caspian definitely awakened my literary crushing.

81Kira
Apr 10, 2007, 4:09 pm

>77 Caramellunacy: ... That's true that Numair is older than he seems, while George is younger.... I think it also confuses my mind more that I first read about George when I was younger, so even 17 seemed old... whereas I was slightly older (but not a lot older) when I read about Numair...

Percy and Ron Weasley from Harry Potter
Nathaniel Brewster from Lord Kirkle's Money by Avi It's Avi's best novel.
Henry Tilney of Northanger Abbey
Mr Darcy of Pride and Prejudice
Captain Wentworth of Persuasion
Hareton Earnshaw from Wuthering Heights
Pippin from The Lord of the Rings
Tuor of The Silmarillion and The Book of Lost Tales Part II, and Feanor from the former
Lemony Snicket

Some of these aren't actual young adult books, but I'm fifteen.

Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre
George from Tamora Pierce's Alanna series
Sirius Black and Lupin from Harry Potter
Eugenides The Thief, Queen of Attolia, King of Attolia
Every Robin Hood Ever

Humm . . . I think this list says I have poor tastes in men. There all thieves or slightly unpleseant . . .

Almonzo from the Little House books. (Laura Ingalls Wilder)

Oh, completely Remus and Sirius from Harry Potter and Calvin O'Keefe from A Wrinkle in Time. I also loved Caspian from Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

That's me really restricting myself to YA, though. Otherwise I'd have to get into Mr. Rochester, Eponine, Enjolras, Newman Noggs (shut up, he's really quite charming in the RSC production), Beatrice...

00Serenity00, I loved your comment "On the other hand, it can't be good for my romantic future to be constantly comparing guys I meet in real life to guys that are fictional and therefore perfect (in my imaginings of them)."

I have a funny story about that...my best friend broke up with a guy because he reminded her of Richard in the Anita Blake books (he always annoyed her)! I laughed so hard. And the sad thing is it was my fault. As she was describing his failings I said "wow sounds like Richard" and she goes "OMG, you're right". The worst part is, she accidently told him that was the reason!!

P.S. I'm going to think about my list and add it later. But this is a great topic! I think I fall in love a little bit with most of the guys in the books I read.

Hi! I'm new to this group, but this thread was just so hilarious:) My literary crushes:
Nat: Witch of Blackbird Pond
Gilbert: Anne of Green Gables
Jasper: Five Little Peppers and How they Grew
Bill Weasley: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Taran: Prydain Chronicles
Calvin: Wrinkle in Time
George: Song of the Lionness series by Tamora Pierce
Numair: Immortals series by Tamora Pierce
Nawat: Daughter of the Lionness series by Pierce
Raistlin: DragonLance Chronicles by Weis and Hickman
Mairelon: Mairelon the Magician
Johnny Tremain & Rab: Johnny Tremain

When I was in sixth grade I read the first Five Little Peppers book and the Anne of Green Gables books. I remember telling my mother that if I ever had sons, I would name them Gilbert and Jasper. She said "over her dead body!"

I still have a crush on Bill Weasley even though I find his love of Phlegm disturbing. ;P

Of the preceding Numair is my favorite. I just love the character!

Oh, I used edit because I had forgotten one.
Bartimaeus from the Bartimaeus Trilogy! He is such a funny, cute djinn!

*giggles* Literary crushes are sometimes the best, you don't get your heart broken.

I totally crushed on Meg from the Wrinkle in Time series, and Lila from Sweet Valley (and Margo, tho she was only in a few books).

Let's see, who else? I kinda had a thing for Mary Anne from The Babysitters Club, okay so that probably isn't YA exactly but whatever. And Susan from the Narnia Chronicles (which was totally brought back by the movie).

George from Nancy Drew, too. Almost forgot about that.

106thecynicalromantic

I have very few. I don't crush very much. But I like Mendanbar from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, and Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. They're just awesome.

I hate, hate, hate Edward Cullen with a fiery burning passion. Everything is always about how hard life is for Edward. He leaves his girlfriend suddenly and with no explanation, plunging her into a suicidal depression? Yes, such a traumatizing experience FOR EDWARD, let's all go save him while he melodramatically tries to kill himself. Grow the hell up. If I were Bella I would've let him die.

Jacob is cute, though. And he gets my sympathy, for I feel that he really does go through more hell that's not his fault than any of this others, and his repayment... is to have Bella never speak to him again because poor ickle jealous Edward doesn't like it.

Um... that's about it.

Marius Zazoo He's incredibly romantic and sweet, just like the rest of the book.
David Uglies never liked Zane.
Wes The Truth about Forever I've got to read her other books.
Nathaniel Bartimaeus trilogy He'd be so much fun to tease.

Girls:
Shep (Nyle) Phoenix Rising
Lirael Lirael She's an awesome magical heroine, and she's a shy quiet librarian.

Wow! I don't have time to go through this WHOLE list now but I didn't see too many guys posting :( I'll have to represent and throw in my votes.

Lisa Hayes and Rook Bartley from the Robotech Series
Lisa was the strong silent type to Rick Hunter's boyish loudmouth character. It was nice to see their relationship mature as the series went on and I was elated when Rick picked her over Lynn Minmei.

Rook was the tomboyish character, from the third series, that finally ended up with Rand (who happened to be my favorite guy character from that series).

Kitiara from the DragonLance Preludes Volume One: Darkness & Light
Before she became evil.

Aerin from The Hero and the Crown

Stargirl from Stargirl
If I was still a teenager she would be my new main crush! Too bad this book wasn't out when I was going to school. Though I'm still not sure if people like this really exist.

Jo March, because, well. Because.
Lucy Pevensie—or at least my vision of what Lucy Pevensie would be like when she became old enough to have a crush on. Let’s say The Horse and His Boy-era Lucy, when she’s all bad-assedly riding off to war with her brother. I thought that was magnificent when I was younger—and I always hated on Susan for being too girly to go to war, even though she was the best archer in existence or whatever.
Marian—from Robin McKinley’s The Outlaws of Sherwood, because she became the fabled Robin Hood—the one who was famous for his archery, while Robin himself was barely adequate with a bow. And she was a noble who would rather hang out with the outlaws. Also, she was pretty.
Fiona from The Giver, with her red hair—she also seemed to me like the most likely candidate for understanding Jonas, though I’m sure just the opposite actually happened in the book—or at least there would be no evidence to support my theory. Clearly, I need to read that one again.

I will also cop to loving Calvin’s line to Meg about her glasses hiding her beautiful eyes, even though I never got hot for Calvin himself.

So, I recently read Sarah Dessen's Just Listen, and I remembered that Owen was mentioned here. I kept thinking, "Hmm, is he literary-crush-worthy?" as I read and eventually decided, "Yes, he is." Although I myself do not have a crush on him, he is pretty cool. (And he's LibraryThing-approved.)

And on this topic of literary crushes, I am reminded of a book signing by Shannon Hale. Her entire speech was about a literary crush on Mr. Darcy. So is her latest book, she said. It was amusing. But since I'm only at the beginning of Pride and Prejudice I don't understand the phenomenon at all. Mr. Darcy is a jerk! Oh well.

Did anyone ever have a crush on Jesse from Tuck Everlasting? I still have crush on him...

Definately Jesse from the Mediator series. He's yummy! And Paul was crushworthy too, if I could get over the evilness.

I'm not forgetting Rob from 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU.

David, from All-American Girl. He's very cute.

I'm in love with Sirius Black. And Remus Lupin is right behind him. Gotta love em'.

Aubrey from In the Forests of the Night and Demon in My View.

Mr. Darcy was always... appealing, even though he was pig-headed at times.

Zane from The Uglies Trilogy. I liked David too, but you know, something about Zane...

Kartik from A Great And Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels.

Rhys from The Two Princesses of Bamarre.

Ben from Got Fangs? and Circus of the Darned.

Oh, and Dylan from Diary of a Crush.

Someone earlier asked what a literary crush consisted of. For me, it's just a character that if I pretended existed in real life, I would be attracted to them. I'm not obssesive, but they're something to fantasize about.

Just curious, but why do a lot of people pick Snape?

117foggidawn
Edited: Jul 19, 2007, 1:23 am

Okay, MrStevens, since I think the Snape thing is mostly me, I'll bite.

First of all, Harry & co. are all too young.
Lots of people crush on Sirius Black, but I never found him all that interesting. In real life, I would probably have a crush on Lupin. . . but this is not real life. So, that's "why not someone else" -- but why Snape?

Well, first of all, you have to understand that I still believe that he's not evil, and will be vindicated in the last book. I believe that his actions at the end of book 6 were under prior instruction from Dumbledore, undertaken at great personal sacrifice. (Incidentally, I also believe that he will die in the last book, but that's beside the point.) Therefore, he's shown himself to be courageous, he's obviously brilliant, and he has the sort of biting wit that I tend to admire, and have to be careful not to indulge in myself lest I lose my reputation for being "the nice one." ;-) There may also be an element of pity involved -- I think he's been lonely all his life, and that contributes to the nastier side of his character.

All right, psychoanalyze away! I never claimed stellar mental health . . . but this is a thread on literary crushes, after all, so I guess I'm in fairly likeminded company. And if, three days from now when the last book is out, he turns out to be evil through and through, you can all laugh; I won't mind. . . much. ;-)

Percy - Scarlet Pimpernel, I loved it when he kissed the ground where his wife had stepped.
Edward Cullen - Twilight
Mr. Darcy
Mr. Rochester
Gilbert Blythe - I have to admit my crush developed from the movie.

When I was a teenager, I definitely had crushes on:

D'Artagnan -- Three Musketeers
Paul Atreides -- Dune
Mercutio -- Romeo and Juliet
Heathcliff -- Wuthering Heights

This is going to date me :) but when I was a teenager, there was a series of books by Katherine Kurtz called the Deryni Chronicles. I had a crush on a character named Lord Derry, and another named Rhys. In fact (embarrassing confession time) I got rid of a nerdy guy who wanted to date me by telling him I had a boyfriend from another school named Sean Derry. One of my cohorts in this scheme actually "signed" my yearbook from Derry!

As an adult, I recently wrote a historical fiction novel for YA and partly fell in love with my own romantic lead, Elisha Kent Kane. Friends accused me of having a love affair with a 150 year-old dead man! My husband took me to visit his grave site, probably to make sure he was really dead!

So, apparently, crushes are not confined to teenagers!

Well, Lupin, of course.

Sorenson Carlisle from Margaret Mahy's The Changeover

Diarmuid dan Ailell from Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar's Tapestry
***SPOILER WARNING***
I suppose that's one big reason why I hate the books... (The author has the bad taste of letting him be slayed in the end... Very bad taste...)
***END SPOILER***

Faramir :-)

I prefer Bran from Will Stanton

Peter from Narnia books

What does a literary crush means? That I fantasized about "going out" (or perhaps making out) with the boy/man. That I wished my "future real boyfriend" would be like him. In many ways he is ;-) (He's not blond though... like all the guys on my list)

I do have problems with their literary girlfriends unless they remind me of themselves ;-) Eowyn is great, as I see myself very much as her, but Laura Chant... I didn't see anything of me in her (except the witchcraft thingy) so I was VERY jealous... especially, because Sorensen was almost exactly like the hero of the story I was spinning at the time I read the book... It felt like Margaret had reached into my head and stolen my boy! LOL

Quicksylver, you said: "the first person I've met who knows Lang's fairy book series" (#76)
I thought they are common knowledge, general education, everyone knows them almost from birth... That's why I haven't spoken of them ever...
Ha... All kinds of things one learns as one gets older.

MrStevens (#116) - I'd say it's because Alan Rickman. I didn't find the book-Snape the least interesting, neither did I find anything attractive in book-Lucius, but the movie... :-D

#136 Makes sense. The movie Snape is more mysterious and less in-your-face. I found the book Snape to be obvious to the point of irritation. Yes, yes, we get it, he is mean to Harry.

I'm with you, Zoe. Actually, to be precise, I liked the book Snape before I liked the movie Snape -- I feel like Alan Rickman does an excellent job with the character, but Rickman is not the reason I like Snape. (Snape may be the reason I like Rickman, but that's another thread!)

I don't think it's surprising to anyone, considering several posts here, but I would love to find an Edward Cullen. He appears to be a younger, modern Mr Darcy, just with that little twist.

Also Dave The Laugh from the Georgia Nicholson series.
Michael Moscovitz from Princess Diaries, although I don't really enjoy where the series is heading now.
Hmmm...these are probably the most memorable at the moment.

Okay. Of course I have to get in on this.

First, Snape. I know he has caused some commotion on this thread, but to everyone who picked him, I'm right there with you.

Louis and Marius from Interview with a Vampire and most of the other Anne Rice vampire books.

Howl from Howl's moving castle. I started out loathing him because he was so childish and irritating, but he ended up growing on me.

The Beast from Beauty: A retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley.

Sherlock Holmes in most everything, but particularly The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King.

Hannibal, both book and movie form from Silence of the Lambs and all those by Thomas Harris.

Okay, that's it for now. I know there are more, but I can't think of them.

I love this thread!

Hugh from the beginning place: the description of him sounds exactly like my real-life boyfriend which makes me like him even more.

Right now I totally have it bad for Leland Stanford Stamper from Sometimes a Great Notion - but not as much the self-absorbed, stoned, neurotic mental case he is at first. At the end, when he sacrifices a chance with the woman he loves, who he attracted through feigned and real helplessness, to do something that would make him truly deserve her (or someone else) someday, I thought, "That's so romantic! Be mine, Lee!"

172ryvre

I've been rereading my childhood favorites, and I definitely had a type. I really went for the misunderstood bad boys.

I absolutely loved Gabriel from L.J. Smith's Dark Visions trilogy. It looks like he's a popular one- I saw him mentioned at least twice above. Something about that character stuck with me long after I'd lost the books. I had to jump through all sorts of hoops to figure out what series he was from and to track down a copy.

My other longstanding crush was Jesse from Connie Laux's Blood Moon trilogy. It appears that I'm the only person on Librarything with those books, which is really a shame. Leather jacket, motorcycle, and a bad attitude- my kind of guy.

In high school, I had a huge soft spot for John Hollis in The Wyndcliffe: A story of suspense by Louise Lawrence, a YA book from the '70s. I found it in my high school library during the '80s, but John, as the ghost of an 1820s Romantic Era poet, was really a timeless soul. And sneaky-funny. And just my type because I ended up marrying someone a lot like him!

I saw that someone mentioned Edward from the Twilight series. One of my students and I often discuss this as we walk through the halls of our middle school. She agrees that Edward is the 'hottest.' I suppose it's all personal preference. I prefer the cold (all year round.) That might just be because of how hot it can get in PA during the summer. (Maybe if I lived in Washington, like Bella, I'd feel differently.)

Edward doesn't really need to control his change...he just needs to make sure he keeps himself well-fed. Edward can be "human", other than the marble-like skin and the no making babies.

I wouldn't want to have to worry about ticking off Jacob. Making him mad could be a very bad thing when it comes to him changing. And Jacob is a little too self-centered for me. Mopey about Bella and then the same about Bella and Edward. At least before Jacob becomes a werewolf, Edward doesn't mind Bella spending time with him. (I'd be concerned if my friend were hanging out with a werewolf, especially after I'd seen what happened to Sam's fiance!)

Nall from Listening at the Gate Series by Betsey James

Vidanric/Shevraeth from Crown/Court Duel by Sherwood Smith

Inda from The Fox/ King's Shield series by Sherwood Smith

Ethan from Companion of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde

Eugenides from Thief of Attolia/The Queen of Attolia/ The King of Attolia

Dave the Laugh

Nawat from Trickster's Choice by Tamora Pierce
Numair from Wild Magic Series by Tamora Pierce
Rosto from Provost's Dog series by TP
Neal and Dom FROM Protecter of the Small series by TP

Also Nathaniel Bonner from Sara Donati's books and Jamie Fraser from Diana Gabaldon's Outlanderseries.
These last two books cannot be considered YA , as they are for the hella mature. They are both historical fiction and wonderfully written--there are just bits of it that are serious. But you absoloutly fall in love with the characters, and the research is impeccable for either series so I'd really encourage you to read them.

Howl from Howl's Moving Castle and Christopher Chant from the Chrestomanci novels
Gen from The Thief
Ooh, Nick (that was his name, right?) from Pamela Dean's Tam Lin. I love that book and Nick was so sweet.
Wesley from The Princess Bride
Haven't read them lately, but I think I recall rather fancying Eric Banyon from Mercedes Lackey's Bedlam's Bard series. Something about the attractive young musician....
And I was definitely in love with D'Artagnan from The Three Musketeers when I first read it. Too bad I recently saw a theater production that almost totally ruined both D'Artagnan and the entire book for me. I may have to reread it to regain my love.
McKinley's Robin Hood from The Outlaws of Sherwood
And of course George from the Alanna books
Also, I've always found Ed in Markus Zusak's I am the Messenger very cute and puppy dog-like. I am jealous of his love for Audrey.

At the moment I'm reading Peter Dickinson's Angel Isle and I'm crushing a bit on Ribek. Not sure how it turns out in the end yet but I'm liking what I see so far :D

Interesting topic. I don't know if I had "crushes" per se... but there were definitely characters of both sexes that I liked and admired (and would get defensive of if other characters were mean to them).

{Huckleberry Finn} was probably my first because HF/TS are two of the first books I clearly remember reading. I most definitely remember being mad at Tom Sawyer for being so mean to Huck.

There was a YA book by {{Ursula Le Guin}} that I can't quite remember the title or characters' names (I'm so helpful, I know)... but it was about a boy who created his own secret world to escape to and I definitely liked him.

I was Charles Wallace's age when I read {Wrinkle in Time} for the first time, so I had more of a thing for him than for Calvin. I think Calvin is sweet but I still like Charles Wallace better (not the six-year-old version anymore, of course).

I loved Diclon from {Secret Garden}. I spent hours staring at the sky to make my eyes blue because according to the book, his eyes had turned blue from staring at the sky so much.

And as far as {Harry Potter} goes I have way more of a thing for Hermione than Harry, for many of the same reasons I had a thing for Charles Wallace.

I definitely liked Tom Sawyer when I was younger. Now I fall in love with the heroes from Jane Austen's novels...or really any novel with a really well-conceived love interest. It's like emotional obsession...how wrapped up I get in the lives of fictional characters. How sad.

I'm a librarian, and I have to agree about the fan-girl crush on John Green. My friends agree.

Even worse for me is Stephen Chbosky. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is just such an amazing book. I saw him at a conference recently and even though I'd been looking forward to meeting him, I realized I couldn't think of anything to say to him and didn't approach him. The friend I was with did a little better, she at least talked to him, but she did burst into tears as soon as she walked away from him.

>205 NarrowPath: - I wonder if the Le Guin book you are thinking of is The Beginning Place. Hugh doesn't exactly create his own world, but he is one of my literary crushes too. Plus, his ambition in life is to go to library school and become a librarian.

Like some of the others here, I have to second Gilbert Blythe. He was definitely my first real literary crush! I still re-read all of the Anne books nearly every year. And, though I did not set out deliberately to do this, ended up marrying a doctor (or someone who is still on his way to being a fully-liscensed doctor) in real life! I just realized that.

Later I had crushes on Adam in LJ Smith's Secret Circle trilogy and Stephan in the Vampire Diaries. I feel odd admitting to liking these characters.

And then a few years ago, I have to admit to crushing on Harry Potter. As an adult, I thought that was maybe a little weird, but still. . .

I never got crushes on fictional characters. I mean I liked them and all, but I just couldn't get past the fact that they were...you know...fictional.

And then there was MARCUS FLUTIE from Megan McCafferty's books. I can quote the book on this one and say for certain that he's my crush-to-end-all-crushes. Ha, Ha!

I'm dating myself a little here, but:

Ponyboy, Soda, Dallas, & Darrel from The Outsiders.

Mark and Bryon from That Was Then, This Is Now.

And my all-time favorite, even more than Mr. Darcy, would have to be Troy from Dark Angel. You kind of have to read Heaven first to get the full impact, but *sigh* Troy. Even re-reading it as an adult in graduate school, he still made my heart go pitter-patter. LOL.

Mr Darcy (P&P), Captain Wentworth (Persausion), Shevraeth (Crown Duel) - he's just so cool, calm and collected; Sirius Black (HP), Gen (The Thief, Queen of Attolia, King of Attolia) - cleverest, tricksiest character ever; Kent (Summers at Castle Auburn), always good when the boy's loved the heroine for ages, but she has no idea; and Peaceable Sherwood (The Sherwood Ring) - his brain, his confidence, the way he know he's going to marry Barbara because 'I always get what I want, Miss Graeme.' SWOON!

Totally agree with Owen from Elsewhere!!

Another cutie that hasn't been mentioned is Patrick from Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's Alice series.

As far as author crushes (complete with big sigh!!).. MO WILLEMS. He's adorable, he's funny, he does an awesome storytime.. what more could a librarian want. I've seen him three at conferences and signings, etc.. He signed my pigeon shirt and I went home all excited to tell my hubby that Mo Willems touched me.

What? No crushes on Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye??

Constantine in Sunshine by Robin McKinley-Fiercely protective yet vulnerable; iron self-control. Riveting.

Nick in The Demon's Lexicon-intriguing and so lost

I liked Jace in the City of Ashesand in City of Bone- bright, beautiful angel- but I fully preferred Simon by the end of City of Glassbrave and self-aware

Fanboy in The Astonishing Adventures of FanBoy and GothGirl My kind of geek, growing into a decent young man

Definitely George Cooper from the Alanna books by Tamora Pierce. Also from that universe, Neal of Queenscove and Nawat Crow. From her Emelen universe, Dedicate Crane--he's such an articulate snob. :D

When I was younger and in my L.M. Montgomery phase I definitely had a crush on Gilbert Blythe.

And Lupin and Snape, of course. Also Shadow from American Gods.

Christopher Heron from The Perilous Gard. This book has the best, best ending to a love story ever - up there with the end of Pride and Prejudice and I do not say that lightly know how may austen fans might take offence.

Other include Mr. Darcy, of course. Calvin from A Wrinkle in Time and Will from The Subtle Knife.

Eugenides from The Thief, The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia is my main squeeze. He's so sassy. Jamie Fraser from Outlander is the only literary character who has ever come close to topping Gen.

I also love me some Corlath from The Blue Sword. That scene near the end of the book when he's reunited with Harry after the battle gets me teary eyed every time.

First ever: Flanders Calloway from Ensign Lydia Gaff, which my mother was given as a school prize in the 1930s. Flan Calloway was my first teenage heartthrob, my sister's first teenage heartthrob and my mother's first teenage heartthrob - quite a feat, eh?

Perhaps the oddest - Conory from The Mark of the Horselord by Rosemary Sutcliff. Not a traditional type but left a powerful image.

And as an adult I discovered K M Peyton and fell completely for moody, magnificent Pennington in Pennington's Seventeenth Summer and its sequels.

I'm old now, but I remember having a big crush on Mercutio when I first read Romeo and Juliet as a thirteen-year-old. My favorite Austen man is definitely Captain Wentworth now, but I don't remember who it was then. Joe and Tony both from Betsy-Tacy books; I am going to take a stroll down Memory Lane and see if I can come up with some more memorable men. Calvin from Wrinkle and Westley from P.Bride are givens.

Dimitri, Adrian, and Christian from the Vampire Academy series...

Dave the Laugh from Angus, Thongs, and Full-frontal Snogging...

Nathanial Benson from Fever 1793...

Jacob from North of Beautiful...

Sin from Swoon...
