YA literary crushes

What YA lit character(s) did/do you have a crush on?

I was (and arguably still am) totally in love with Calvin from the Wrinkle in Time series - he had me from that scene where he tells Meg to keep wearing her glasses so nobody else will find out how beautiful her eyes are. Aww! ;)

I'm not sure about a YA lit character I've ever had a crush on, but I sure can tell you a YA lit author I have a crush on...Neil Gaiman!

I'll have to keep thinking about the characters.

I can't just pick one!! If I were still a teen these would be my top picks:

Jesse from The Mediator series. I love how he always calls Suze "querida".

Edward from Twilight is pretty much heartthrob material, but a bit on the scary side.

Arkarian from The Guardians of Time series by Marianne Curley is an amazing character. Blue hair and violet eyes, who can complain?

Harry Potter, just because he's the boy who lived and now that he's older, he is most definately turning in to romantic hero material

Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables. Yum...

And the Weasley twins from Harry Potter.

And Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice...

Kind of off the subject but the post about Will Stanton made me think of it. I always wondered if he and Jane ever got together after the series ended (you know, in that imaginary world where all literary characters exist in peace and harmony LOL). It seemed as though there might have been a little something between them.

Fyrefly - although I don't recall particularly crushing on Charles Wallace, I definitely had a crush on one of the twins - either Denys or Sandy, can't remember which - when I read Many Waters. My guess is that Calvin was a good influence on them, lol.

T.J. from Chris Crutcher's Whale Talk was also the object of some of my affections. My first lit crush was Joe Hardy from the Hardy Boys, and it is worth noting that I thought Nancy Drew had it pretty darn good with Ned as well!

Hi, I'm new to this group, and I'm way too old to still have crushes on YA book boys, but, I do. And as with some of the rest of you, the Wills dominate:

And on a side note, I had the biggest crush on Dimitri from the movie (the ANIMATED) movie Anastasia.

Wow, I love Dmitri too. But I'm partial to John Cusack anyway.

As for YA characters, I always liked Charming from Ella Enchanted, Sirius Black from Harry Potter, Laurie (Little Women), and John Reid (Time Enough for Drums). I'm sure I'll think of many more later, though.

One of my favourites was always Gabriel from L.J. Smith's Dark Visions trilogy. (Ah, touchstones... why did I have to tell you that L.J. Smith is indeed L.J. Smith rather than Alexander McCall Smith?).

Without a doubt, went through my Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables and Mark Darcy from Pride and Prejudice stage but those are general favorites. I have to say that I think my personal favorite might have to be Rhett Butler, perhaps out of loyalty to Clark Gable from Gone with the Wind. (or John Reid from Time Enough for Drums too, but I believe he's already taken).
Oh, and I was oddly very attracted to Vermeer from A Girl With a Pearl Earring.

I don't remember having many literary crushes when I was actually a YA -- Sam Gribley from My Side of the Mountain, maybe and definitely Calvin from A Wrinkle in Time. Oh, and Laurie from Little Women. I'm still bitter that he didn't end up with Jo. Amy was a brat and didn't deserve him. I was much happier that Rose ended up with my other Alcott crush, Mac (Eight Cousins, Rose in Bloom).

And I forgot Eugenides (The Thief/Queen of Attolia/King of Attolia)!

Have to agree with foggidawn. Laurie was a favorite, and saw myself as Jo when I read it (circa fifth grade, so I was 11?) so I was extremely upset when they didn't end up together. The random professor seemed like a cop out if you ask me.

I agree with Howl from Howl's Moving Castle as well.

And I'll throw in the centaur from Artemis Fowl even though I don't think that would work out so well in real life. Butler started to grow on me in the later books as well.

I am new to this group and I love this thread. I am/was in love with a lot of the favorites; Calvin, Laurie, Gilbert. But my biggest crush is Joe in the Betsy-Tacy series. I adore him. I know they aren't strictly YA, the early ones are definitely kid lit, but once Betsy is in high school and beyond they are YA.

I love the part when he shows up in the backseat of the car when Suze is getting kissed for the first time LOL Also when he finds her in Doc's bed with all the tools because of Maria and when he takes care of her feet after the Jimmy Cho incident....I could go on and on, but I guess I'll stop there.

We now have t-shirts to make our Edward (from Twilight) obsession public. One our students (kylara) created a t-shirt and had them made for her and a few of her obsessed friends (she included me--yeah!!). On the front they say... "one of Edward's crazy wannabe wives"...the crazy is crossed out and on the back it has fun quotes that we all got to write on all the t-shirts. Oh the fun we have with character crushes!

I had a bit of a crush on Brom in Eragon, moreso after Jeremy Irons played him in the movie (does that count?).

I also found Dustfinger in Inkheart mysterious, making him attractive. And I like Sirius more than Lupin as a character, but I think I'd have more of a crush on Lupin in Harry Potter (obviously). And who wouldn't have a crush on Westley in Princess Bride? Though I really liked Inigo too. And I had a crush on Nathaniel from Bartimaeus Trilogy from book 1, and I only liked him more as the series progressed. The third book was awesome.

I never realized how very much I became attached to characters.

Having finally read some of the series that have been mentioned more than once in this thread, I understand why certain characters keep cropping up.

I read the Uglies trilogy, and while I found both David and Zane to be cute and charming, neither of them really crossed the border into BookBoyfriend territory for me.

On the other hand, I just finished The Mediator series this morning, and my goodness, where do I find myself a Jesse? I mean, he was obviously written to be the perfect guy, but come on! He's gorgeous, he likes reading, and he took care of her gross blistered feet!

Taran was pretty cool :-) I loved the Prydain Chronicles in school, but they got me in to a lot of trouble. I used to read ahead and the teacher would get mad at me.

A lot of people have mentioned Edward from the Twilight books. How?? He's TOO perfect. He's handsome (without really an image of his handsomeness), he's strong, he's powerful, he wants to drink the blood of his beloved... OK, there's a flaw there... but it just seems so clichéd to like Edward. That's what annoys me about Bella.

But I have a couple questions. What comprises a literary crush? If you have one, does it mean you lie awake at night thinking, "Oh, but if only Edward/Sirius/Gilbert, etc. were real, and would ask me out!" When that character has a sucessful relationship with another character, not you, do you scream "No!" and slam the book to the floor, only to pick it up a minute later to read more of your beloved?

Or is it more along the lines of "Aw, s/he is cool... interesting... good-looking... intriguing... Too bad it's fiction"?

No, I think the idea of literary crushes is definitely more of the third - at least for me. I always call them my BookBoyfriends... the idea being that if I could somehow transport myself into their books (a la Inkheart), I'd set myself about making them my boyfriend. :) These characters are obviously written to have appealing characteristics... we can find them appealing while still separating reality from fiction.

And, at least for me, most (though not all) of my BookBoyfriends are the romantic lead of their story, or at least have a romantic relationship. There's nothing of jealousy about it - it just makes it easier to mentally cast myself as the female lead.

And I have no problem with my literary crushes having romantic relationships. In fact, I prefer it that way because, like fyrefly said, I like to be able to cast myself as the heroine. Plus I like to see my BookBoyfriends happy.

Wow, I just have to jump on the bandwagon here. I realized as I got older that what I liked in book-men I liked in life-men. While there haven't been any perfect matches, at least I know what I like. These literary crushes started as someone I would have killed to date, but now they're models of a man I'd like to have fully enmeshed in my daily life.

So I had a total crush on Calvin from the very first time I read A Wrinkle in Time

I adored Darcy from Pride and Prejudice, like so many others on this thread.

And I never got enough of Aragorn or Gandalf from Lord of the Rings...on the Gandalf thing, it wasn't so much a physical attraction, it was that he could have taught me some very cool things.

Recently, I developed a crush on Cody from Sharon Creech's The Wanderer. I would love to know what he grew up to be.

I've also gained a new series to read from this discussion. I've never heard of Cabot's The Mediator series. I just added the first book to a shopping list for tomorrow.

The Mediator books are totally addictive. I took the first one out from the library and spent the rest of the week driving around on my lunch breaks to different bookstores and libraries so I could finish the series. Took me about a week to track down and read all 6 books.

Too damn right! I got the first one out of the library, read it in a day, passed it to a friend at work, who read it in a day and then immediately ordered the rest of the series from amazon priority - and read them one per day, immediately handing them off to me. :-)

They're not great literature or anything, but man, are they addictive, trashy, fluffy fun.

Wow, what a fun thread. Ditto to Nat from Witch of Blackbird Pond, Ged (especially endearing in The Tombs of Atuan), Taran from The Prydain Chronicles, and Percy from The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Not yet mentioned: Beau Geste; Spiller, from The Borrowers Afield et al.; Snufkin, from Tove Jansson's Moomin series; Ian Direach, from "How Ian Direach Got the Blue Falcon" in Lang's Orange Fairy Book (based mostly on Ford's illustrations, I admit); Sir Gareth of Orkney, from any account of the Knights of the Round Table; a good half-dozen of Rosemary Sutcliff's characters; and, in any and every context, Robin Hood.

As for Lord of the Rings, I too had a crush on Legolas back in the day. Now that I'm no longer a YA, though, it's Faramir I fancy (Tolkien's Faramir, that is, not Jackson's).

Though I love Pride and Prejudice, Mr Darcy's eternal popularity is puzzling to me. He's a brilliantly written character, but as a romantic ideal? Judgmental of others, bottles up his emotions, doesn't communicate well, and is a drag at parties. Good luck, Elizabeth!

This is completely off topic, but Bookherd, you are the first person I've met who knows Lang's fairy book series. Aren't they great!

The first time I read it, I thought George was old, too, but when I reread it, he was only 17 at the beginning of Alanna. So he was just over 5 years older than her - which really is far less old than Numair...whom I always expected to be younger. That age difference was kinda weird for me.

It's a little young to be considered YA, but I still reread them fairly often....I was totally in love with Manly from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series

Also, Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables, though I loved him best in Anne of the Island, and F'nor from Anne McCaffrey's Dragonflight and sequels--he was so much hotter than F'lar.

I have a funny story about that...my best friend broke up with a guy because he reminded her of Richard in the Anita Blake books (he always annoyed her)! I laughed so hard. And the sad thing is it was my fault. As she was describing his failings I said "wow sounds like Richard" and she goes "OMG, you're right". The worst part is, she accidently told him that was the reason!!

Jacob is cute, though. And he gets my sympathy, for I feel that he really does go through more hell that's not his fault than any of this others, and his repayment... is to have Bella never speak to him again because poor ickle jealous Edward doesn't like it.

So, I recently read Sarah Dessen's Just Listen, and I remembered that Owen was mentioned here. I kept thinking, "Hmm, is he literary-crush-worthy?" as I read and eventually decided, "Yes, he is." Although I myself do not have a crush on him, he is pretty cool. (And he's LibraryThing-approved.)

And on this topic of literary crushes, I am reminded of a book signing by Shannon Hale. Her entire speech was about a literary crush on Mr. Darcy. So is her latest book, she said. It was amusing. But since I'm only at the beginning of Pride and Prejudice I don't understand the phenomenon at all. Mr. Darcy is a jerk! Oh well.

Just curious, but why do a lot of people pick Snape?

Okay, MrStevens, since I think the Snape thing is mostly me, I'll bite.

First of all, Harry & co. are all too young.
Lots of people crush on Sirius Black, but I never found him all that interesting. In real life, I would probably have a crush on Lupin. . . but this is not real life. So, that's "why not someone else" -- but why Snape?

Well, first of all, you have to understand that I still believe that he's not evil, and will be vindicated in the last book. I believe that his actions at the end of book 6 were under prior instruction from Dumbledore, undertaken at great personal sacrifice. (Incidentally, I also believe that he will die in the last book, but that's beside the point.) Therefore, he's shown himself to be courageous, he's obviously brilliant, and he has the sort of biting wit that I tend to admire, and have to be careful not to indulge in myself lest I lose my reputation for being "the nice one." ;-) There may also be an element of pity involved -- I think he's been lonely all his life, and that contributes to the nastier side of his character.

All right, psychoanalyze away! I never claimed stellar mental health . . . but this is a thread on literary crushes, after all, so I guess I'm in fairly likeminded company. And if, three days from now when the last book is out, he turns out to be evil through and through, you can all laugh; I won't mind. . . much. ;-)

In fact (embarrassing confession time) I got rid of a nerdy guy who wanted to date me by telling him I had a boyfriend from another school named Sean Derry. One of my cohorts in this scheme actually "signed" my yearbook from Derry!

As an adult, I recently wrote a historical fiction novel for YA and partly fell in love with my own romantic lead, Elisha Kent Kane. Friends accused me of having a love affair with a 150 year-old dead man! My husband took me to visit his grave site, probably to make sure he was really dead!

I love, love Two moons in August! I actually looked around for in several used book stores, for some time, but I could never find it. I finally went on Amazon got it.

What an amazing book! When I was a girl I also read it over and over!

Most recently I loved Rudy from The Book Thief, but long before that there was Howl from Howl's Moving Castle and Adaon from the Prydain series. When I was growing up I had a huge crush on Hamlet.

I liked T.J. from Whale Talk,too, but I liked the main guy from Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes better. I just can't remember his name at the moment.

My other "book boyfriends" include Edward Cullen(duh!), Wes from The Truth About Forever, Brian from The Sisterhood, Finn from Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowen Boys, and Craig from It's Kind of a Funny Story. I must be crazy for that last one, considering he was suicidal at one point and did drugs.

Hugh from the beginning place: the description of him sounds exactly like my real-life boyfriend which makes me like him even more.

Right now I totally have it bad for Leland Stanford Stamper from Sometimes a Great Notion - but not as much the self-absorbed, stoned, neurotic mental case he is at first. At the end, when he sacrifices a chance with the woman he loves, who he attracted through feigned and real helplessness, to do something that would make him truly deserve her (or someone else) someday, I thought, "That's so romantic! Be mine, Lee!"

I read Blacklisted by Gena Showalter over this past weekend and really loved Erik in that book. A very no holds barred, self sacrificing type of hero.

To weigh in on the Twilight debate now that I've read them, Jacob, sure he's less mature than Edward; he's sixteen and Edward's immortal. Edward just feels fake to me. I really love Alice.

First thing that comes to mind for me are the "bad boys" of LJ Smith's books: Julian of The Forbidden Game, Damon of The Vampire Diaries, Vol. 1, and Nick of The Secret Circle.

I've been rereading my childhood favorites, and I definitely had a type. I really went for the misunderstood bad boys.

I absolutely loved Gabriel from L.J. Smith's Dark Visions trilogy. It looks like he's a popular one- I saw him mentioned at least twice above. Something about that character stuck with me long after I'd lost the books. I had to jump through all sorts of hoops to figure out what series he was from and to track down a copy.

My other longstanding crush was Jesse from Connie Laux's Blood Moon trilogy. It appears that I'm the only person on Librarything with those books, which is really a shame. Leather jacket, motorcycle, and a bad attitude- my kind of guy.

In high school, I had a huge soft spot for John Hollis in The Wyndcliffe: A story of suspense by Louise Lawrence, a YA book from the '70s. I found it in my high school library during the '80s, but John, as the ghost of an 1820s Romantic Era poet, was really a timeless soul. And sneaky-funny. And just my type because I ended up marrying someone a lot like him!

I suppose it's all personal preference. I prefer the cold (all year round.) That might just be because of how hot it can get in PA during the summer. (Maybe if I lived in Washington, like Bella, I'd feel differently.)

Edward doesn't really need to control his change...he just needs to make sure he keeps himself well-fed. Edward can be "human", other than the marble-like skin and the no making babies.

I wouldn't want to have to worry about ticking off Jacob. Making him mad could be a very bad thing when it comes to him changing. And Jacob is a little too self-centered for me. Mopey about Bella and then the same about Bella and Edward. At least before Jacob becomes a werewolf, Edward doesn't mind Bella spending time with him. (I'd be concerned if my friend were hanging out with a werewolf, especially after I'd seen what happened to Sam's fiance!)

Interesting topic. I don't know if I had "crushes" per se... but there were definitely characters of both sexes that I liked and admired (and would get defensive of if other characters were mean to them).

{Huckleberry Finn} was probably my first because HF/TS are two of the first books I clearly remember reading. I most definitely remember being mad at Tom Sawyer for being so mean to Huck.

There was a YA book by {{Ursula Le Guin}} that I can't quite remember the title or characters' names (I'm so helpful, I know)... but it was about a boy who created his own secret world to escape to and I definitely liked him.

I was Charles Wallace's age when I read {Wrinkle in Time} for the first time, so I had more of a thing for him than for Calvin. I think Calvin is sweet but I still like Charles Wallace better (not the six-year-old version anymore, of course).

I loved Diclon from {Secret Garden}. I spent hours staring at the sky to make my eyes blue because according to the book, his eyes had turned blue from staring at the sky so much.

And as far as {Harry Potter} goes I have way more of a thing for Hermione than Harry, for many of the same reasons I had a thing for Charles Wallace.

I definitely liked Tom Sawyer when I was younger. Now I fall in love with the heroes from Jane Austen's novels...or really any novel with a really well-conceived love interest. It's like emotional obsession...how wrapped up I get in the lives of fictional characters. How sad.

Even worse for me is Stephen Chbosky. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is just such an amazing book. The friend I was with did a little better, she at least talked to him, but she did burst into tears as soon as she walked away from him.

I'm old now, but I remember having a big crush on Mercutio when I first read Romeo and Juliet as a thirteen-year-old. My favorite Austen man is definitely Captain Wentworth now, but I don't remember who it was then. Joe and Tony both from Betsy-Tacy books; I am going to take a stroll down Memory Lane and see if I can come up with some more memorable men. Calvin from Wrinkle and Westley from P.Bride are givens.
